Washed

"Washed" February 2001. 802 x 600 mm, Acrylic+Plastered Masonite

"Washed". My title for this. Uncleanness cries out to its owner for eradication. "Cleaning", "washing" are words of action that imply Conflict and the change that will inevitably result. Change for the better or worse. Let's say that, using color, pure white is 'clean', and anything darker is 'dirt'. What would be the use of this work, then, if it was all clean? Or all dirt? It would be empty, as 'art' goes. Hmm? So to enhance the cleanness, some of the original 'dirt' must also be portrayed, to enable the finished work to be called 'art'! The 'art' therefore portrays the Conflict between clean and unclean, light and dark, and ultimately, good and evil. So? This is a work by humanity, about humanity, of humanity, for humanity. That means that all man-made art, traditional, abstract, impressionist, expressionist, modern, surreal, etc. - no matter what the subject (or even object!) - points to some yearning of the human heart, does it not? Hmm?
