"St. Johns Anglican Church, Mafikeng"
COMMISSION. November 1988. 150 x 100mm, Watercolor,Ink
Sheila Milton, a resident of Mafikeng, commissioned me
to paint a series of small pictures of her favorite Mafikeng buildings,
to take back to England when her family emigrated. I had to repeat
this exercise as she was pleased with the first lot.
They are shown in the five consecutive works as seen on the previous page.
In those days, my self-confidence was low, and I actually turned the commission
down, not believing that I could do them well enough. But she encouraged me
to persevere anyway, and I succeeded. The power of encouragement. Memorable.
